Kentucky Car Crashes: Highway Accidents Kill 6, Injure 5

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. ? Kentucky State Police were investigating whether distracted driving caused a tractor-trailer to plow into an SUV carrying eight people on Saturday, killing six and possibly triggering a serious crash on the opposite side of the highway.

The truck driver is "telling us that he saw the vehicle that was in front of him and he hit the brakes and he didn't hit them in time," Master Trooper Norman Chaffins said. " ... There was a reason for that and we're trying to figure out what the reason was."

The late-morning crash was followed 15 minutes later by a multi-vehicle crash on the opposite side of Interstate 65 that injured three people. The site was just 15 miles from where 11 people died in 2010 when a tractor-trailer crossed the median and hit a van carrying a Mennonite family. Ten people in the van were killed along with the truck driver and the National Transportation Safety Board determined the truck driver was distracted by his cell phone.

Chaffins said despite snow flurries, weather was not a factor in Saturday's crashes. He said police were also looking into the truck driver's logs and had taken blood tests.

The six killed were identified as members of an extended family from Marion, Wis.

They were identified as James Gollnow, 62, and his wife, Barbara Gollnow, 62; Marion Champnise, 92, a friend; Sarina Gollnow, 18, relationship unknown; and foster children Gabriel Zumig, 10, and Soledad Smith, 8.

The two survivors were also foster children. Police identified them as Hope Hoth, 15, who was transported to a hospital in Lexington with burns and a broken spine; and Aidian Ejnik, 12, who was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville with cuts to the back of his head.

Chaffins described both of the children's injuries as non-life-threatening.

The two crashes shut down the busy stretch of highway for about five hours. The first happened at 11:13 a.m. EST on northbound I-65 south of Elizabethtown. In the second crash, four vehicles collided at the same location on the southbound side.

Chaffins said in the first crash, a 1999 Ford Expedition was hit from behind and then hit the car in front of it, but the driver of that vehicle had only minor injuries. He did not know where the Expedition was headed.

The Expedition was "totally engulfed in flames. It was totally destroyed by the fire," he said, adding, "It's just a charred mess."

He said one eyewitness told police two people emerged from the blaze and one appeared to be on fire.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and was cooperating with police, Chaffins said. "He's obviously pretty torn up about everything."

The southbound crash involved a tractor-trailor and three other vehicles. Police were investigating whether rubbernecking was the cause.

"That's what we're suspecting, that people were looking at the crash that happened on the other side and became distracted and caused a chain-reaction crash," he said.

Those injured in the second crash were taken to hospitals but were not identified.

'Giant Slayer' scares up ho-hum $28 million debut

(AP) ? It wasn't exactly a mighty victory, but "Jack the Giant Slayer" won the weekend at the box office.

The Warner Bros. 3-D action extravaganza, based on the Jack and the Beanstalk legend, made just $28 million to debut at No. 1, according to Sunday studio estimates. It had a reported budget of about $200 million.

"Jack" comes from Bryan Singer, director of "The Usual Suspects" and the first two "X-Men" movies. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Ian McShane and Stanley Tucci.

Among other new releases, the college romp "21 & Over" from Relativity Media made only $9 million this weekend to open in third place. And the horror sequel "The Last Exorcism Part II" from CBS Films debuted in fourth place with just over $8 million.

This is the sixth weekend in a row that movie ticket sales are down, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. One bit of good news for "Jack" is that it had a 56-percent uptick from Friday to Saturday, suggesting strong word-of-mouth and more family audiences for the PG-13 adventure.

Dergarabedian pointed out that many of the action pictures aimed at men this year ? including "Snitch," ''The Last Stand," ''Bullet to the Head" and "Parker" ? have been disappointments at the box office.

"Other films have done OK but we need to do better than OK to keep up with last year's pace," he said. "Where is the audience? I don't want to overstate this, but where are the guys?"

Among the few bright spots, the Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy "Identity Thief" has become the first film to cross the $100 million mark this year. Now in its fourth week in theaters, the Universal movie has made $107.4 million.

"This is a tough marketplace right now. Everything is underperforming," Dergarabedian said. "There hasn't been a huge breakout hit yet. For every 'Identity Thief' there have probably been 10 other films that have underperformed."

Meanwhile, winners at last weekend's Academy Awards, including "Argo," ''Silver Linings Playbook" and "Life of Pi," are still sticking around in the top 20 after several months in theaters, further underscoring the weakness of recent new releases.

But Dergarabedian was optimistic that things will turn around with the opening next week of "Oz the Great and Powerful," a much-anticipated prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" starring James Franco and directed by Sam Raimi. It's expected to open in the $75-100 million range.

"We need the cavalry to arrive and we need them soon," he said. "Maybe James Franco is the cavalry."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday:

Human metabolism in health and disease mapped

Mar. 3, 2013 ? Building on earlier pioneering work by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, an international consortium of university researchers has produced the most comprehensive virtual reconstruction of human metabolism to date. Scientists could use the model, known as Recon 2, to identify causes of and new treatments for diseases like cancer, diabetes and even psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Each person's metabolism, which represents the conversion of food sources into energy and the assembly of molecules, is determined by genetics, environment and nutrition.

The researchers presented Recon 2 in a paper published online March 3 in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Doctors have long recognized the importance of metabolic imbalances as an underlying cause of disease, but scientists have been ramping up their research on the connection as a result of compelling evidence enabled by the Human Genome Project and advances in systems biology, which leverages the power of high-powered computing to build vast interactive databases of biological information.

"Recon 2 allows biomedical researchers to study the human metabolic network with more precision than was ever previously possible. This is essential to understanding where and how specific metabolic pathways go off track to create disease," said Bernhard Palsson, Galletti Professor of Bioengineering at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.

"It's like having the coordinates of all the cars in town, but no street map. Without this tool, we don't know why people are moving the way they are," said Palsson.

He likened Recon 2 to Google mapping for its ability to merge complex details into a single, interactive map. For example, researchers looking at how metabolism sets the stage for cancerous tumor growth could zoom in on the "map" for finely detailed images of individual metabolic reactions or zoom out to look at patterns and relationships among pathways or different sectors of metabolism. This is not unlike how you can get a street view of a single house or zoom out to see how the house fits into the whole neighborhood, city, state, country and globe. And just as Google maps brings together a broad set of data -- such as images, addresses, streets and traffic flow -- into an easily navigated tool, Recon 2 pulls together a vast compendium of data from published literature and existing models of metabolic processes.

As a multi-scale representation of the human metabolic network, Recon 2 provides essential context for data being reviewed by researchers. Palsson and other scientists in the field have already successfully demonstrated the utility of such models in simple organisms such as yeast and E.coli. As a result, they have been able to engineer these organisms in the lab to improve the efficiency of ethanol production and predict drug resistance in bacteria.

One of the most promising applications for the network reconstruction is the ability to identify specific gene expressions and their metabolic pathways for targeted drug delivery. Large gene expression databases are available for human cells that have been treated with molecules extracted from existing drugs as well as drugs that are in development. Recon 2 allows researchers to use this existing gene expression data and knowledge of the entire metabolic network to figure how certain drugs would affect specific metabolic pathways found to create the conditions for cancerous cell growth, for example. They could then conduct virtual experiments to see whether the drug can fix the metabolic imbalance causing the disease.

Palsson's Systems Biology Research Group at UC San Diego built the first virtual reconstruction of the human metabolism network, known as Recon 1, in 2007 with a six-person team. It featured more than 3,300 known biochemical reactions documented in over 50 years of metabolic research. Recon 2, which contains more than 7,400 reactions, was built by bringing together researchers from dozens of institutions around the globe in a series of "jamboree" meetings to refine and consolidate the data used in the reconstruction. Palsson said this jamboree approach helped the group establish common standards to build a consensus reconstruction, simplify its usability for biomedical researchers, and increase its transparency.

Recon 2 is already proving its utility, according to Ines Thiele, a professor at the University of Iceland and UC San Diego alumna, who led the Recon 2 effort. Thiele earned her Ph.D. in bioinformatics as a student of Palsson's and was part of the original Recon 1 team. Several other UC San Diego alumni, and former Palsson students, participated in the consortium from their new institutions, including Neema Jamshidi (Ph.D., 2008, M.D., 2009), who is now interning at UCLA; Jason Papin (Ph.D., 2004), a professor at the University of Virginia; and Nathan Price (Ph.D., 2005), who is a professor at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Wash.

Thiele said Recon 2 has successfully predicted alterations in metabolism that are currently used to diagnose certain inherited metabolic diseases.

"The use of this foundational resource will undoubtedly lead to a myriad of exciting predictions that will accelerate the translation of basic experimental results into clinical applications," said Thiele. "Ultimately, I envision it being used to personalize diagnosis and treatment to meet the needs of individual patients. In the future, this capability could enable doctors to develop virtual models of their patients' individual metabolic networks and identify the most efficacious treatment for various diseases including diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases."

As much as Recon 2 marks a significant improvement over Recon 1, there is still much work to be done, according to the research team. Thiele said Recon 2 accounts for almost 1,800 genes of an estimated 20,000 protein-coding genes in the human genome. "Clearly, further community effort will be required to capture chemical interactions with and between the rest of the genome," she said.

Improved synchronicity: Preventive care for the power grid

Mar. 1, 2013 ? President Obama in this year's State of the Union address talked about the future of energy and mentioned "self-healing power grids" -- a grid that is able to keep itself stable during normal conditions and also to self-recover in the event of a disturbance caused, for example, by severe weather.

But as the national power-grid network becomes larger and more complex achieving reliability across the network is increasingly difficult. Now Northwestern University scientists have identified conditions and properties that power companies can consider using to keep power generators in the desired synchronized state and help make a self-healing power grid a reality.

The Northwestern team's design for a better power grid could help reduce both the frequency of blackouts and the cost of electricity as well as offer an improved plan for handling the intermittent power sources of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, which can destabilize the network.

"We will be looking at a completely different power grid in the future," said Adilson E. Motter, who led the research. "The use of renewable energy is growing. More people will be driving electric cars, and the power grid will be delivering this energy, not gas stations. We need a power grid that is more capable and more reliable. This requires a better understanding of the current power grid as well as new ways to stabilize it."

Motter is the Harold H. and Virginia Anderson Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The crux of the challenge is that for the U.S. power grid to function the power generators in each of its three interconnections (Eastern, Western and Texas) must be synchronized, all operating at the frequency of 60 hertz. Out-of-synch power generators can lead to blackouts that affect millions of people and cost billions of dollars -- losses similar to those of the Northeast blackout of 2003.

Having a network that can synchronize spontaneously and recover from failures in real time -- in other words, a self-healing power grid -- could prevent such blackouts. To help achieve this, power companies could apply the Northwestern guidelines as they add power generators to the network or tweak existing generators.

A paper describing the researchers' mathematical model, titled "Spontaneous synchrony in power-grid networks," is published in the March 2013 issue of the journal Nature Physics.

When a problem develops in the power-grid network, control devices are used to return power generators to a synchronized state. Motter likens this to using medicine to treat someone who is ill. He and his colleagues are suggesting conditions to keep synchronicity in good shape so interventions are kept to a minimum.

"Our approach is preventive care -- preventing failures instead of mitigating them," said Motter, an author of the paper and an executive committee member of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO). "The guidelines we offer could be very useful as the power grid expands."

The researchers derived a condition under which the desired synchronous state of a power grid is stable. They then used this condition to identify tunable parameters of the power generators that result in spontaneous synchronization. This synchronization can be autonomous, not guided by control devices.

"The blackout at this year's Super Bowl was caused by a device that was installed specifically to prevent blackouts," said Takashi Nishikawa, an author of the paper and a research associate professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern. "A large fraction of blackouts have human and equipment errors among the causes.

"Reduced dependence on conventional control devices can improve the reliability of the grid," he said. "Our analysis also suggests ways to design control strategies that potentially can improve the existing ones."

Power generators are very different from each other; some are large and others small. Motter and his colleagues identified a "body mass index" for power generators, which they suggest should be kept approximately the same (making, in essence, all generators look the same to the network) in order to strengthen spontaneous synchronicity in the system. If the body mass indices change, they should be changed in a coordinated way.

The researchers demonstrated their model using real power grids of hundreds of power generators, similar to the size of the Texas portion of the U.S. power grid.

Utahns climb to mount battle against cancer | The Salt Lake Tribune

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) Climbers climb at Rockreation in Holladay on Saturday. First Descents' fourth annual event has people climbing from 9 a.m. to noon to benefit cancer programs and raise awareness.

Holladay ? Alyssa Englund celebrated her one-year "Cancerversary" by taking yet another step ? this time up a rock wall.

A year after completing treatment for breast cancer, the 37-year-old former Sandy woman wasn?t just pulling for herself Saturday but for the 70,000-plus young adults between ages 18 and 39 who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

She and others participated in the Fourth Annual Climb-A-Thon, held at the Rockreation Sport Climbing Center, 2074 E. 3900 South, as part of a 16-state effort to raise money for the nonprofit group First Descents ? and the camps it sponsors for cancer patients ? by climbing a cumulative 70,000 vertical feet.

As a New York lawyer, Englund had just finished the biggest case of her career and had big plans since graduating from Brigham Young University?s law school when her life took an abrupt turn with the diagnosis: cancer.

Like a lawyer, she vowed to fight it.

By December 2011, scans showed no cancer. She continued 34 more rounds of radiation and began hormone therapy to stop the disease from returning.

Thus began a new battle.

She plunged into a severe depression with insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks. It got so bad that Englund told her doctors she?d rather get cancer again than continue this emotional and mental anguish.

"It?s much easier to cope with the cancer than the aftereffects caused by depression," Englund explained. "I joke with people that just because my hair came back doesn?t mean I?m better."

So she went to a free First Descents camp, where young adult cancer fighters kayak, surf or climb to help them get past their diagnosis. They also get a nickname at the camp to help them focus on their new life.

"Bandcamp," as her camp mates called her, said the experience helped her realize her capabilities, rather than her limitations.

"There is no going back to normal," Englund said, "because you have to get a new version of yourself."

The late Nick Raitt loved the camp so much it inspired his parents, Lori and Lee Brower, who attended Saturday?s climb to continue sharing the positive spirit their son embodied.

The Browers, of Layton, created WACKY, to raise money for youth cancer programs. Raittwas diagnosed in high school and died at age 22 after a battle with soft-tissue cancer.

"It was a healing of the spirit," Brower said of his son?s "life-changing" camp experience.

Whitney Nelson, of Washington, D.C., took a break from her skiing vacation in Utah to climb the wall Saturday. She has a friend who has gone to the group?s camps. While dusting chalk off her hands, Nelson said, "I?ve just seen firsthand how these camps transform people."

Ed Orcutt?of the 20th District and a constituent about the proposed ?bicycle tax? and noting that bicycling was bad for the environment due to all the exhaling of CO2. While I had received it from a trusted friend and ran with it, some folks asked to verify its authenticity, a good practice after recent hoaxes that have embarrassed the media (see: Manti Te?o).

I am not a fan of much in the House Transportation tax proposal nor of?many tax proposals, but I have to admit I think there are valid reasons to?tax bicycles. Think about this for a moment: Currently motorists are?paying to use their cars on the roads while they are actually driving?their cars. At the same time, they are paying for bike lanes because there?is no gas tax ? or any transportation tax ? generated by the act of?riding a bike on the roadways. So, if cars pay for the roads they are?using, it only makes sense that bicyclists would also be required to pay?for the ?roads? they use when they are actually biking on them.

Also, you claim that it is environmentally friendly to ride a bike. But if?I am not mistaken, a cyclists has an increased heart rate and respiration.?That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of?carbon dioxide from the rider.? Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas?and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.

I know, you own a car and drive so are paying gas tax ? but not while you?are riding your bike. When you are driving your car and generating gas tax?you are also driving on the roads so are only really paying for the roads?when driving ? not while biking.

Sorry, but I do think that bicyclists need to start paying for the roads?they ride on rather than make motorists pay.

Therefore, it is unfair for bicyclists to subsidize the?construction and maintenance of highways that they impact far less than?the motorists. If anything, new bike purchases should earn a $25.00 tax?credit because of the savings they provide to the state.

Not only do I believe that a bike tax is unfair in principle but the?proposed amount is disproportionately large compared to vehicle excise?taxes in the state. A tax of $25 on a $500 bicycle purchase is 5% of that?sale. The vehicle excise tax in the proposed package for the state is?0.7%. The federal government even offers tax credits on electric vehicles,?up to $7,500 depending on the value of the vehicle. It?s absurd that?Washington state plans on taxing bicyclists while such a credit system?exists to promote energy efficiency. Bicycles are far more efficient even?than electric cars. Bicyclists already pay substantial sales, property,?and federal taxes which fund two-thirds of transportation spending in?Washington. Bicyclists who own cars pay the same license tab and other?car-related taxes even if they drive less.

This new tax would also hurt the bicycle industry in the state of?Washington, an industry that already competes with internet vendors and?bordering states with lower sales tax. Bicycle stores near the edges of?our state have been impacted for years by the reduced sales tax in Oregon?and Idaho. Residents would have 25 more reasons to purchase bikes outside?of Washington should this proposal pass. In-state bicycle sales would also?be lost to internet vendors based elsewhere which neither pay taxes in?Washington nor employee residents of Washington. Surely the loss of tax?revenue on in-state bicycle sales would offset the forecasted gains from?the proposed tax.

Tom at the Seattle Bike Blog talked to Rep. Orcutt today to confirm that he does believe bicyclists are polluting the air through excessive exhaling.

Side note: I?ve heard reasons to slow down on a bike ride, but this is a new one for me.
