Why New Research Showing that Day Care Isn't Linked to Behavior ...

Time spent in day care doesn?t link to problems for older children ? at least, not when that day-care time is separated from the socio-political context in which the care is provided. A team of researchers from Norway, Harvard and Boston College, examining the varied research that sporadically associates an increase in hours in day care with increased behavior problems, noted that the work was all based on child-care studies done in the United States. And the United States, they argue, is a lousy place to study the impact of early child care on children.

Most parents will remember the headlines from the last round of the ?Does day care harm children?? battle here in the United States: ?Does Day Care Make Kids Behave Badly? Study Says Yes? (ABC). ?Child Care Leads to More Behavior Problems? (Fox). ?Day-Care Kids Have Problems Later in Life? (NBC). ?Poor Behavior Is Linked to Time in Day Care? (The New York Times). ?Bad Mommies? (Slate).

All that (and more) from a single, small finding, published in 2007, based on a study of 1,300 U.S. children from 4? years old through the end of sixth grade. Among those children, researchers found that those who spent a year or more in day care while of preschool age were slightly more likely to become disruptive in class during elementary school.

That this study set off yet another salvo in the debate over working parents said very little about the research, and far more about the world into which that research dropped. What that headline flurry really revealed was that we, as a society, still considered ?whether working parents are good for kids? a topic worthy of arguing about.

While I?m accustomed to using the words ?working parents? here, the debate, of course, centered around mothers. No one questions whether fathers should work. No one questions whether moms ?should? work anymore, either ? instead, we fall back on questioning whether all those various forms of child care are really ?good? for children, the universally recognized code for raising that politically incorrect issue.

That debate has advanced since 2007, but not far enough to institutionalize any change. Mr. Mom may be dead, but when it comes to taking the heat for sending the children to day care, the burden still falls on the ? married or single, rich or poor ? mom. Even the U.S. Census Bureau considers the mother the ?designated parent,? charged with caring for the children;? when fathers stay home, that?s (infuriatingly for parents of both sexes) ?child care.?

It?s the fact of the debate, rather than the fact of the day care, that the research team I described above, authors of a more recent study, suggest is primarily responsible for any association between unruly behavior and time spent in day care. In Norway, where day care is subsidized, of a reasonably consistent quality, and an expected part of childhood (in 2009, 79 percent of all 1- to 2-year-olds, and 97 percent of all 3- to 5-year-olds attended publicly subsidized center care there), researchers found little evidence that more time in day care could be associated with ?externalizing problems? like defiance and restlessness, in 3-year-olds (a result they hope to confirm in older children).

In other words, when all the energy that goes into debating the merits of day care is put, instead, into ensuring that day care is of a high quality and available to everyone, then any association between time spent in that care and poor behavior essentially disappears. ?Whereas child care in U.S. policy is generally treated as an unintended or unfortunate consequence of workforce participation among women,? the researchers wrote, ?child care in the Norwegian corporatist economy is part of a broader family policy to promote maternal workforce participation and employment rights ? as well as universal access to high-quality environments for learning and development beginning in the second year of life.?

That?s consistent with the U.S. research as well. In 2007, Slate?s Emily Bazelon contacted the author of that much-publicized earlier study, and asked her to examine the quality of care received by the children who spent more time in day care, and who had a higher-than-average incidence of bad behavior. ?The kids with more reported behavior problems in elementary school were the ones who spent three or four years in day care and whose care was, on average, of lower quality.?

If, when day care is consistently high quality and embraced by a society, the (already small) negative impact of time spent in that care is erased, then it?s hard to argue that it?s the fact of the day care itself that causes the problem. But ?Socio-political Context of Upbringing Linked to Unruly Behavior in Some Children? makes for an unwieldy headline, and an obvious one. There are a whole lot of factors that play into being a child who enters low-quality day care at a very young age, and stays there. But none of them get people as worked up as ?day-care kids have problems.?

Which may be why this latest research study ? the one showing that day-care kids are doing just fine ? hasn?t grabbed any major headlines at all.

U.S. business urges Obama pursue new trade negotiating power

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading U.S. business group urged President Barack Obama on Thursday to build on trade successes of the past two years by seeking legislation that would allow him to submit trade deals to Congress for straight up-or-down votes without amendments.

"I think the message to the president and the administration is: It's time to engage the business community and Congress in discussions about Trade Promotion Authority," Myron Brilliant, senior vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, told reporters at a briefing on the group's 2013 trade priorities.

Congress last passed a Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA, bill in 2002 and that was after a bitter fight in the U.S. House of Representatives. Only 25 of approximately 210 House Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the legislation, reflecting the strong opposition of the AFL-CIO labor federation and others on the left who associate trade agreements with job losses.

The legislation, by barring amendments to trade agreements, has been considered essential to encouraging other countries to make their best offers in talks with the United States.

It also gives Congress the opportunity to set negotiating objectives for the White House in areas such as labor, environment, agriculture and intellectual property rights.

The law expired in June 2007 and Obama has never asked for a renewal, to the frustration of many Republicans and some Democrats who favor an activist U.S. trade agenda.

Even so, his administration has been negotiating a proposed regional free trade agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership with 10 other countries. It also is widely expected to launch talks with the 27-nation European Union this year.

Brilliant argued the White House needs TPA to complete the talks on both those initiatives and others such as a proposed International Services Agreement.

Both U.S. Senator Max Baucus, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Representative David Camp, the Republican chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, have identified renewal of Trade Promotion Authority as one of their top priorities this year.

But the White House, which is in the midst of finding new leaders for both the U.S. Trade Representative's office and the Commerce Department, has not sent a clear signal that it is ready to push for the legislation.

"The administration recognizes trade promotion authority as an important tool to support trade policy. During this administration, USTR has consulted closely with Congress on trade issues. We will continue to do so on the range of issues, including TPA, as appropriate," an administration official said.

Republican President George W. Bush used the 2002 legislation to negotiate trade deals with Australia, Bahrain, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, South Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Oman, Panama, Peru and Singapore.

Congress passed the last of those trade deals - the Colombia, Panama and South Korea pacts - on broadly bipartisan votes in 2011 after the Obama administration negotiated a number of changes to address Democratic concerns.

During a period of gridlock on other issues, Republicans and Democrats also came together last year to renew the charter of the U.S. Export-Import Bank and approve "permanent" normal trade relations with former Cold War foe Russia.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce officials said that track record makes them optimistic of bipartisan support in Congress for Trade Promotion Authority if Obama makes it a priority.

But they also acknowledge the somewhat "abstract" legislation is harder to sell to many Democrats than a specific agreement with tangible trade benefits.

The importance of app icons

The importance of app icons

Renowned icon and app designer Louie Mantia -- who's been a guest on our design show, Iterate, not once but twice -- has shared his thoughts on app icons and their importance in an article on mantia.com:

[While] you can focus on marketing needs, that is a one-time scenario for each person. Any individual will only buy your app once. One time. It?s important to recognize that optimizing for this one situation may hinder the needs of your everyday user.

I believe good app icons are most valuable for your customers, your everyday users, not first-time shoppers.

Mantia shows a lot of examples, and even some brilliantly redesign suggestions for industry titans. Check it out.

No. 1 Azarenka beats Sloane Stephens, Djokovic reaches Australian Open final

The American teenager nearly came back to take the second set, but the defending ladies champion held on for the victory. In men's play, the defending champ cruised past David Ferrer.

Sloane Stephens sat for nine minutes, mostly staring at the court and trying to forget the curious timing of Victoria Azarenka's medical timeout.

She may have been the only one trying to ignore it.

The 19-year-old American had just saved five match points and broken Azarenka. But she knew she had to hold serve to stay in her first Grand Slam semifinal whenever Azarenka ? the No. 1 player and defending Australian Open champion ? returned to Rod Laver Arena.

The restless murmuring in the crowd gave way to slow claps. Why had Azarenka chosen that very moment for a medical break?

Azarenka eventually hustled onto the court, and Stephens won only three more points.

"I almost did the choke of the year," Azarenka said in a frank admission during an on-court interview. "At 5-3, having so many chances, I couldn't close it out."

The crowd that had cheered wildly for Stephens, only 25 hours after she ousted an injured Serena Williams, gave Azarenka tepid applause as she left the court following her 6-1, 6-4 victory. She'll face 2011 finalist Li Na in the final Saturday night. Given the support Li enjoyed in her 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova, there's no question which player the crowd will favor in the title match.

Azarenka's immediate post-match remarks suggest she panicked after failing to convert five match points, her forehand misfiring. She had little trouble finishing the match after she came back, and the No. 29-seeded Stephens had cooled off.

"I just felt a little bit overwhelmed. I realized I'm one step away from the final and nerves got into me for sure," Azarenka said.

The 23-year-old Belarusian said she was later compelled to explain that she misunderstood the question in the on-court interview, and she wanted to dispel the perception that her medical timeout amounted to little more than gamesmanship.

"I understand the point of people maybe not understanding what I said; me not understanding what I've been asked," she said during an official news conference more than two-thirds devoted to questions on her medical timeout. "So I'm just glad that I'm here, you know, to make everything clear.

"You know, I think you cannot really judge by (a) few words. The situation had to be explained."

Medical staff said Azarenka had timeouts for treatment of left knee and rib injuries. The rib needed to be manipulated because it was affecting her breathing. Tournament director Craig Tiley said Azarenka hadn't broken any rules.

Azarenka hadn't helped herself in a second television interview after the match when she said she couldn't breathe.

"I had chest pains," she said. "It was like I was getting a heart attack."

She tried to allay any negative perception with her explanation that the choking was related to shortness of breath from the rib injury, not her faltering game.

"When you cannot breathe you start to panic," she said. "I was really panicking, not because I couldn't convert my match point. That's not the case. I mean, I'm experienced enough to go over those emotions. But when you cannot breathe, when something's really blocking you, the stress ? that was the stress I was talking about.

Behind The Dressing Room Door: Anthropologie Product Reviews ...

Good morning everyone and happy Friday! I hope you all have had a fabulous week. I'm so happy that the weekend is finally here. I've had a rough week at work and I'm looking forward to some relaxation this weekend. Last weekend my Mom and I headed to Anthro to do some reviews. This is a small first set, with Round 2 coming soon so stay tuned!

Now on to the reviews...

Here is Maeve's Fetch & Frolic Dress. This dress fits somewhat TTS. I'm wearing a size 0. I would say that small busted girls should consider sizing down as the back is very stretchy and has give. The dress has an adorable dot print in black and white with a contrasting red ribbon which I love. It's a little log for my 5'3'' frame so I would need to get the Petite version. The dress also has pockets (yay) and removable straps.

Back to the rack for now.

Fetch & Frolic Dress
Style# 26527382
Price: $148

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: Somewhat TTS, contrasting bow, pockets, cute pattern
Cons: Length a little long, can size down if smaller busted
Verdict: B+
Must, Lust or Back to the rack: Lusting
Here is the Voksoper Dress. This dress fits pretty TTS. I'm wearing a size 2 here and could easily wear a size 0. This dress is just lovely! I love the white and black sophisticated look of the top paired with the black flowy bottom. The back of the dress is intricate and interesting as well. The length is good for my 5'3'' height as it hits just at the knee. I would like to try the Petite version as I think it would look better slightly shorter.

Lusting.

Voksoper Dress
Style# 26621748
Price: $128

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: TTS, black/white pattern, sophisticated look
Cons: None
Verdict: A
Must, Lust or Back to the rack: Lusting

Here is Bordeaux's Ruched Striped Column Dress.?This dress fits slightly big. I'm wearing an X-Small and it was loose on me. I would consider trying a size down for your normal size as this is pullover style and is stretchy. The dress is extremely flattering and comfortable on. I really love the black and white look as I can see pairing this with some bright red or turquoise heels. The length hits just at my knee which is okay, but I think it would need to be hemmed. The website says there is a Petite length, but I don't see an option for that.

Back to the rack for now.

Ruched Stripes Column Dress
Style# 25641119
Price: $148

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: Black/white stripe pattern, flattering, comfortable
Cons: Runs slightly big, size down, length long for Petites
Verdict: B
Must, Lust or Back to the rack: Back to the rack

Here is Ranna Gill's Tropicalia Pleated Maxi Dress. Wow! This dress is just amazing! It fits TTS. I'm wearing a size 0 and it fits like a dream! I love all of the colors, the beautiful painter-like pattern, fit and the detailing on the collar. The length is too long for my 5'3'' frame but they do have a Petite version online. I am going on a Caribbean cruise at the end of March and I think this would be a great dress to wear for one of the formal nights on the cruise.

Purchased a 0P and can't wait to wear it!

Tropicalia Pleated Maxi Dress
Style# 26226449
Price: $228

Color: DARK GREY
Pros: TTS, colors, pattern, fit, detail on collar, gorgeous
Cons: Length is too long
Verdict: A+

The Internet Is Dead, or Something... | Social Media Today

The Internet is Dead...or something

The Internet is dead.

OK, that?s clearly not true, but we tend not to talk about it much anymore.

There was a time when you could spend an entire day on your computer without going online. I remember when we first got Internet, going online was a process. Going online was a task.?Because of the distance of our computer from our phone line, if I wanted to go online, I had to stretch out a long piece of phone cable, plug it into the phone jack, and then go for the dial-up modem, listen to that wonderful dial-up sound, and pray that it actually connected.

Oh, and we would announce that were going online. It was an activity. And it meant that for however long we were online, no one could call us:

?I was calling you for hours but kept getting a busy signal. Were you online??

And we started with a few of the free services like Juno and Netzero (and perhaps a few others I can?t recall), and bumped around those until the free services were gone, and signed up for the king of the moment: AOL. Remember them?

But now, we don?t even think about it. Rarely do we declare that we are ?going online.?

Why? Because we?re always online. I remember when I helped switch my parents over from dial-up to DSL I had a hard time explaining that theoretically they were ?always? online, while at the same time helping them understand that just because they were always online, didn?t mean that the world was creeping back at them through their phone line, ready to steal whatever they had on the computer.

With the pervasiveness of broadband, wireless, and mobile technology, we are all ?always connected.? We don?t go to the Internet, the Internet comes to us. If you?re like me, you get push notifications anytime someone interacts with you on any number of platforms, whether it?s an email, a blog comment, a tweet, something on Facebook or Instagram.

But we don?t talk about those things as much. They are just a part of our lives,?seamlessly integrated into our daily activities and doings.

Back in the days of CB radios (the seventies), I would go on and talk with friends. And what did we talk about? CB Radios!

Same with the early adoption of cell phone usage. It was common to hear someone saying, ?Yeah! I?m on the train! And talking to you!?

Not anymore. The fact that we?re no longer really talking about the Internet, per se, doesn?t mean it?s passe or ?dead.? It just means that we don?t think about it anymore. In some ways I think that?s what happening with Facebook. Some say it?s on the way out because people don?t talk about it anymore. I don?t think that?s true; I think we don?t talk about it anymore because we use it regularly without even really thinking about it. And when I say ?we? I?m talking mostly about the general public, not those of us who work in this field and get paid to think and talk about it.

Those outside of the marketing and communications world don?t obsess over these things the way some of us do.

And that?s why you?ll read blog posts ad nauseum about email being dead, or blogging, or whichever platform or technology we?re talking about here.

But the fact that we?re all online all the time is a good thing, at least for businesses and marketers looking to connect with us. It gives more opportunities for businesses to become a part of the social graph of individual users, and on their terms. More opportunities for customer service and lifestyle oriented marketing.

You want something that?s dead? Let?s talk 8-tracks, or leisure suits, or MySpace?oh?wait?

The Engadget Show 40: The Best of CES with Kaz Hirai, 50 Cent, Ken Block and Arianna Huffington

The craziest week of the tech year is at end, and we have to say, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Sure, it wasn't quite as epic as it has been in years past, but CES is still the show that sets the stage for the rest of 2013. By that measure, we may well be seeing an interesting shift. With the loss of Microsoft, some smaller companies have been using the show to make names for themselves amongst the 4K TVs released by the bigwigs like Samsung, Sony and LG. The Pebble smart watch, the Oculus Rift and the Razer Edge all scored big. We take a look at the products and discuss how things like crowdfunding are affecting the world of hardware startups.

We've also got interviews galore -- we'll be talking with Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, SMS Audio CEO (and rapper, we're told) 50 Cent, rally car driver Ken Block, Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Stern Pinball CEO Gary Stern, MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis and CEA president Gary Shapiro among many, many others (including a very special appearance from Gallagher -- this is Vegas, after all). Daniel, the winner of our Bring a Reader to CES contest will show you what it's like going to the show for the first time and our editors discuss how this year's event compares to years past. And, of course, we've also got lots of floor time with our favorite gadgets from the show.

Toss on a comfortable pair of walking shoes, because it's time to do CES all over again.

Hosts: Tim Stevens, Brian Heater
Guests: Kaz Hirai, 50 Cent, Ken Block, Arianna Huffington, Gary Stern, Gary Shapiro, Daniel Orren, and many, many others
Producer: Ben Harrison
Executive Producers: Brian Heater, Joshua Fruhlinger

Your iPhone warranty won't cover the damage this soup bowl stand may cause

1 day

Look, we've all thoughtlessly put our iPhones into dangerous situations ? on the edge of a sink, right next to a kleptomaniac monkey, on the roof of a moving car, and so on ? ?and had the little gadgets live to tell their tales. But these?strokes of luck are no reason to suddenly start using a modified soup bowl as an iPhone stand.

Daisuke Nagatomo, a partner at design firm MisoSoupDesign, told NBC News that people are so obsessed with their smartphones, that they don't want to put them down, "even while eating." It's their way of staying connected with the world and avoiding feeling lonely.

Nagatomo suggests picturing a guy eating at a restaurant, alone, with chopsticks in one hand and a cellphone in the other. "For some people, that is absolutely the most normal thing to do." But there's one problem, Nagatomo explains: The fella in our example basically needs a third hand to eat properly.

That's why MisoSoupDesign has created the "Anti-Loneliness Ramen Bowl," a bowl which doubles as an iPhone stand, so that you can eat properly while using your iPhone. Yes, there's some tongue-in-cheek silliness to the whole thing, and it doesn't sound like Nagatomo is genuinely suggesting keeping your iPhone on the edge of a soup-filled bowl?? but MisoSoupDesign intends to produce the strange dish anyway.

"The bowl is almost ready for production in the factory," Nagatomo says. "We are aiming mid-April to May for some limited edition bowl distribution through our website, and also in Asia."

There are no details on pricing just yet. ?It might be wise to look into a good iPhone protection plan which covers water ??or soup?? damage while waiting for those to be announced.

Bellator?s Rick Hawn says sponsor stopped check after loss to Michael Chandler

Bellator's Rick Hawn lost to Michael Chandler last Thursday in a title fight. Hawn, an Olympian in judo, was submitted in the second round. The fight was a part of Bellator's first broadcast on Spike, and was viewed by just under a million viewers.

Still, Hawn says one of his sponsors wasn't happy his performance, and stopped his check.

So one of my main sponsors from my fight canceled his check cuz he wasnt happy with the outcome or my performance. Read his explanations below.

"At this point, a stop payment has been placed on check which cannot be cashed or deposited now"

"I will not comment on Rick and his fight. That is not my place. But what I will tell you is this: I took a huge chance with him. TV exposure was great?but it only holds weight if he wins or puts on a good show. Neither happened. At the end of the day?not one sole (sp) will run to [my] store and buy product because they [saw my logo and saw] Rick loose (sp) the fight. I've made it my career and business to know what nets a return on investment for the brand?and this is the number 1 reason why I DO NOT hand out money or product to fighters."

Its funny how all my pics wearing his product are still up on his company pages even after he says and does all this stuff!!

A lawsuit is pending so I cannot comment on who it is just yet but stay tuned.

This isn't a sponsor dropping a fighter after a bad performance or two. It's a sponsor making a deal to pay a fighter, and then breaking that deal.

When a sponsor signs on with a fighter, it's a risk. That fighter may lose. That fighter may get injured, or not perform the way you or your company want him to. But that's the risk you take when getting involved with MMA or any sport where companies sponsor individual athletes.

When Cain Velasquez's sponsors signed onto the UFC heavyweight champion's fight on Fox last November, they knew there was a chance he would be knocked out in the first round. They took that risk because the rewards of being associated with the champ are so great. Hawn's sponsor did the same.

Hawn's sponsor wants to have it both ways -- get the glory of working with a winner without the risk of having a loser on their payroll. It doesn't work that way. Hopefully, Hawn's lawsuit will expose the business for being so low.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

Epigenetics explains rheumatism? Genes and their regulatory 'tags' conspire to promote rheumatoid arthritis

Jan. 20, 2013 ? In one of the first genome-wide studies to hunt for both genes and their regulatory "tags" in patients suffering from a common disease, researchers have found a clear role for the tags in mediating genetic risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an immune disorder that afflicts an estimated 1.5 million American adults. By teasing apart the tagging events that result from RA from those that help cause it, the scientists say they were able to spot tagged DNA sequences that may be important for the development of RA. And they suspect their experimental method can be applied to predict similar risk factors for other common, noninfectious diseases, like type II diabetes and heart ailments.

In a report published in Nature Biotechnology Jan. 20, the researchers at Johns Hopkins and the Karolinska Institutet say their study bridges the gap between whole-genome genetic sequencing and diseases that have no single or direct genetic cause. Most genetic changes associated with disease do not occur in protein-coding regions of DNA, but in their regulatory regions, explains Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., a Gilman scholar, professor of molecular medicine and director of the Center for Epigenetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences. "Our study analyzed both and shows how genetics and epigenetics can work together to cause disease," he says.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating disease that causes inflammation, stiffness, pain and disfigurement in joints, especially the small joints of the hands and feet. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, an assault led primarily by white blood cells. According to Feinberg, several DNA mutations are known to confer risk for RA, but there seem to be additional factors that suppress or enhance that risk. One probable factor involves chemical "tags" that attach to DNA sequences, part of a so-called epigenetic system that helps regulate when and how DNA sequences are "read," how they're used to create proteins and how they affect the onset or progress of disease.

To complicate matters, Feinberg notes, the attachment of the tags to particular DNA sequences can itself be regulated by genes. "The details of what causes a particular sequence to be tagged are unclear, but it seems that some tagging events depend on certain DNA sequences. In other words, those tagging events are under genetic control," he says. Other tagging events, however, seem to depend on cellular processes and environmental changes, some of which could be the result, rather than the cause, of disease.

To tease apart these two types of tagging events, the researchers catalogued DNA sequences and their tagging patterns in the white blood cells of more than 300 people with and without one form of RA.

The team then began filtering out the tags that did not appear to affect RA risk. For example, if tags were seen on the same DNA sequence in those with and without RA, it was assumed that the tags at those sites were irrelevant to the cause or development of the disease. Then, from among the RA-relevant tags, they narrowed in on tags whose placement seemed to be dependent on DNA sequence. Finally, they made sure that the DNA sequences identified were themselves more prevalent in patients with RA. In this way, they created a list of DNA sequences associated with altered DNA tagging patterns, both of which were associated with RA.

Ultimately, the team identified 10 DNA sites that were tagged differently in RA patients and whose tagging seemed to affect risk for RA. Nine of the 10 sites were within a region of the genome known to play an important role in autoimmune diseases, while the 10th was on a gene that had never before been associated with the disease. "Since RA is a disease in which the body's immune system turns on itself, current treatments often involve suppressing the entire immune system, which can have serious side effects," Feinberg says. "The results of this study may allow clinicians to instead directly target the culpable genes and/or their tags."

"Our method allows us to predict which tagging sites are most important in the development of a disease. In this study, we looked for tagging sites under genetic control, but similar tags can be triggered by environmental exposures, like smoking, so there are many applications for this type of work," says Yun Liu, Ph.D., a lead researcher on the project.

The study also may shed light on how evolution works, explains Feinberg. "It seems that natural selection might not simply be selecting for an individual's current fitness level but also for the adaptability of future generations given an unknown future. We think that certain genetic sequences may be biologically beneficial and conserved over time because they increase the amount of variation found in tagging patterns, giving individuals a greater chance of adapting to environmental changes."

Reebok Keeps Flip Flopping Ad Agencies [THE BRIEF] - Business ...

Good morning, AdLand. Here's what you need to know today:

Reebok brought back DDB as its agency of record, dumping McGarryBowen. This has actually happened before as McGarryBowen did Reebok's creative between 2004 and 2009; then DDB took over; then Reebok gave creative duties back to McGarryBowen last year. (We're confused, too.)

Honda picked four finalists in its ad review. Contenders include The Martin Agency, Mullen, 72andSunny, and incumbent RPA.

The FDA chose DraftFCB to do its new creative campaigns to fight youth tobacco use.

Mobile signup ads platform Pontiflex raised $7.7 million in Series D funding led by Talus Holdings.

R/GA opened up a new office in Sydney, Australia.

VITRO is now fast food chain Red Robin's creative agency. Periscope handled its business previously.

Team One promoted Jeremaiah Knight from group account director of digital to managing director of digital. He now works across all of the agency's clients, which includes Lexus, JW Marriott, and The Ritz Carlton.

IPG has invested in Kiip, a mobile rewards platform.?Kiip found Brian Wong said, "By having a partner like IPG and the innovative team at the IPG Media Lab join us, we expect to see accelerated global growth with top-tier marketers who are looking to engage with mobile consumers. Having launched just over a year ago, the traction we have made introducing a new advertising model to major brands is remarkable and the potential of rewards-based communications with a connected consumer is nearly limitless."

There's now an app called DeleteMe Mobile?that can reduce your online footprint and increase your privacy.

Patrick Dempsey wins legal bid for coffee company

Patrick Dempsey's bid to buy coffee chain Tully's has been approved.

The 'Grey's Anatomy' actor outbid competitors including Starbucks to buy the Seattle based chain through his company Global Baristas LLC earlier this month and after a legal objection, federal judge Karen Overstreet ruled that the initial auction was fair and no mistakes had been made

Patrick said.''I've been deeply humbled by the outpouring of support from the city of Seattle and am very proud to be a new business owner in this amazing city. We have a lot to accomplish over the next few months and years, and I am excited to now call Seattle my second home.''

Declaring victory over Starbucks on Twitter previously, he wrote: ''We met the green monster, looked her in the eye, and...SHE BLINKED! We got it! Thank you Seattle! (sic).''

He added: ''I'm thrilled that we won and I'm even more excited about saving Tully's Coffee and its hundreds of jobs.''

Tully's Coffee, which also has stores in Washington and California, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October.

AgriNurture Inc., teamed up with Starbucks for a combined bid of $10.6 million, but Patrick's company bought the chain for $9.2 million.

Yes, Mark Richt, Georgia Football Will Be Elite in 2013

SEC pride is real, and it's important.?

The chants of "S-E-C" coming from the southeastern part of the United States on Jan. 7, as Alabama was putting the finishing touches on its 42-14 dismantling of Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship Game, gave the conference its seventh straight national title and kept the perception that the SEC is the top conference in college football alive and well.

But in Athens, Ga., it was bittersweet.

Had Georgia gained five more yards in the SEC Championship Game and knocked off Alabama, it could have been the Bulldogs hoisting the crystal football in Miami Gardens, Fla., instead of the Crimson Tide.

Instead, the Bulldogs settled for a Capital One Bowl matchup with Nebraska, where junior quarterback Aaron Murray lit up the Big Ten's top pass defense to the tune of 427 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Capital One Bowl highlights

With Murray back, Georgia will likely land in the Top 10 in many preseason rankings. But are the Bulldogs truly an "elite" team?

?We plan on being that," Richt told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution?last week during his wrap-up chat with reporters. "We hope to be that. We?ve got to earn that. No one really knew what was going to happen this past season."

His plans will likely come to fruition.

Murray's return solidifies an offense that is going to be dangerous in 2013. Running back Todd Gurley?who led all SEC running backs with 1,385 yards in 2012?will be back, along with fellow rising sophomore Keith Marshall.?

Malcolm Mitchell, who finished last season as Georgia's second-leading receiver despite limited action on offense during the first four games, has "star" written all over him. The emergence of Chris Conley down the stretch and the return of Michael Bennett from his ACL injury should make the receiving corps one of the best in the SEC.

With five starters returning on the offensive line, Georgia should be able to move the ball up and down the field.

Will Georgia be in the national title hunt in 2013?

Will Georgia be in the national title hunt in 2013?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Too early to tell

The question is on defense, where four defensive linemen, two star linebackers and four productive members of the secondary have either exhausted their eligibility or announced they are leaving early for the NFL.

But here's the dirty little secret that nobody is talking about: Georgia's defense wasn't all that it was cracked up to be in 2012, and the Bulldogs still managed to put themselves on the national championship doorstep.

They finished sixth in the SEC in total defense with 357.8 yards per game and 12th in the SEC in rush defense with 182.14 yards per game.

Georgia's defense was successful because it finished 20th in the country in turnover margin, gaining 0.79 turnovers per game. When you have a potent offense, all you have to be is?opportunistic?on defense.

The Bulldogs proved that in 2012. If they can repeat the feat in 2013, they'll be right back in the national championship discussion.

Leading Supplier Of Utility-Scale Solar Solutions Soitec To Exhibit At The World Future Energy Summit In Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi , UAE - January 15, 2013:?

Soitec, a world leader in generating and maanufacturing revolutionary semiconductor materials for the electronics and energy industries, will exhibit its high-efficiency concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) solutions in the French pavilion (booth #8503) at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2013, coming January 15-17 to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Soitec's CPV products range from systems using the company's Concentrix? technology< for utility-scale solar power plants to its Plug&Sun? stand-alone unit for smaller scale energy needs in remote locations. The Plug&Sun system will be showcased at WFES 2013 for the first time.

Meeting the world's growing demands for clean, reliable energy will require both large-scale power plants and innovative, self-contained solutions to address the needs of off-grid sites,? said Gaetan Borgers, Executive Vice President of Soitec's Solar energy division. At Soitec, we are committed to offering the Middle East a full range of CPV solutions.?

Soitec's CPV technology for large-scale solar power plants
The company's technology, which is designed for use by large-scale solar power plants in sunny, hot and arid regions, provides the highest efficiency of all solar technologies available. While achieving industry-leading energy-generating efficiency of 30 percent ? twice the performance of conventional phottovoltaic technologies ? Soitec's systems can withstaand high temperatures, and sand storms and do not require any water for cooling, making them well suited to help meet energy needs in sunny, hot and arid locations.

Soitec has installed its first project in Saudi Arabia (Medina). The company's high-concentration, high-efficiency technology, matches day-time peak power load curves, making it an optimal solution for Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries. In addition, the technology is industrialized for highly automated manufacturing. Soitec's manufacturing process guarantees the resulting product quality, and the technology is perfectly adapted for bringing local content and leveraging local jobs and growth.

Soitec's Plug & Sun portable mini-tracker
At the WFES summit, Soitec will display its Plug&Sun system, the first portable mini-tracker equipped with 4.2 m² of CPV modules and a two-axis tracking system. These features enable the system to generate up to 3.4 kWp of clean, reliable electricity, allowing it to supplement or replace existing electrification solutions such as diesel- and gasoline-driven power generators or other forms of renewable energy. It is compatible with international electrical standards and comes with an integrated battery system for powering common electrical devices continuously, 24 hours a day.

Although an estimated 20 percent of the world's population lacks access to electricity, the vast majority of affected regions has great potential for generating solar energy. The Plug&Sun system that we will showcase at WFES 2013 provides the performance and ease of use to supply electricity to people living and working away from functioning power grids. It is also a way to replace or complement a diesel generator with solar generated electricity, stored and available 24 hours a day,? said Andra-Jacques Auberton-Herva, CEO and founder of Soitec.

Already a leader in CPV technology for large-scale solar power plants, Soitec is expanding its CPV offerings to meet the needs of additional market segments. The Plug&Sun system is an example of Soite's creativity in bringing complete solutions to customers.

This system is an eco-friendly product offering carbon-free emissions, easy deployment and low-cost operation to help meet sustainable development priorities around the world. Its durable design and tolerance for high temperatures make it ideal for use in sunny regions that have no power grid or unreliable grid connections, including remote communities, mobile sites, water-pumping and desalination systems, eco-lodges, telecommunication antennas and more. The Plug&Sun mini-tracker can supplement or replace existing electrification solutions, such as diesel- and gasoline-driven power generators or other forms of renewable energy. It delivers superior energy-producing efficiency, eliminates any reliance on fuel supplies and needs very little maintenance.

Kofi Annan Comments On Retail - Business Insider

Retailers are missing out on a key demographic and trillions of dollars by not catering more to Third World countries, according to Nobel Prize-winning diplomat Kofi Annan.?

"People at the bottom control trillions of dollars," Annan said in a keynote address at the National Retail Federation convention in New York. "Companies often produce for the middle and upper classes, but the base also has needs."?

The Third World is "waiting for retail," Annan said, noting that six of the 10 fastest-growing economies are in Africa.?

"I often see people in Nigeria and South Africa buying and wearing things they don't need," Annan said. "I ask 'why would you wear this here? Why would you buy it?' and they answer it's because they saw it on television."

Companies entering these countries should work with small farmers and businesses in the region to best-reach the consumers, Annan said.?

"You don't walk into a situation and act like you know better than the natives," Annan said. "You listen to them."?

Annan also commented on the ethical standards big corporations should have when manufacturing overseas.?

"I always tell big companies that they shouldn't need a law to offer fair wages or ensure that operations don't pollute drinking water," Annan said. "But I don't ultimately blame the companies, I blame the officials who let it happen."?

Playmakers' And God Created Great Whales is Beautiful and ...

?

whales

Many plays are designed to serve as semi-mindless entertainment?they are watched, enjoyed, and then promptly forgotten. PlayMakers? And God Created Great Whales is not that kind of play. It is not watched so much as it is experienced, and its haunting images are the sort that stick with the viewer long after the curtains have gone down. The production, which stars its brilliant writer and composer, Rinde Eckert, has been produced off-Broadway and is an OBIE award winner.

Eckert portrays Nathan, a man tasked with composing an opera based on Moby Dick and burdened by a degenerative disease that is destroying his memory. He tries to keep his memory loss at bay by relying on an intricately designed system of tape recorders, and his larger-than-life muse, portrayed by the graceful Nora Cole, is also there to urge him on.

The simple set on which the pair act out this race against time features a piano covered in memos and tape recorders strung from the ceiling, both of which effectively convey the urgency and desperation of Nathan?s quest. ?Bold lighting choices also intensify the drama of this sad but ultimately touching story. While the slightly chaotic, avant-garde style is not for everyone, there is so much beauty here that most viewers will be thoroughly captivated.

While the show is, in many ways, a sort of re-imagining of Moby Dick, it also become something all its own. What it means to be an artist and creator, what we do with our short time here on earth and, of course, the mystery of memory are all themes that flit to the surface. But, like the pieces of Nathan?s own shoddy memory, these ideas only appear for a brief moment before they?re gone. It?s only later, after the show, that the viewer can go home and fully digest this beautiful piece.

India, China agree to hold joint military operations

India, China firm up plan for joint military exercises

Annual defence dialogue marks start of India?s engagement with new PLA leadership

India and China have agreed to hold their first joint military exercise in five years and to expand exchanges between their Armies, Navies and Air Forces.

The decisions were made at the fifth annual defence dialogue which took place here on Monday against the backdrop of recently warming military ties following a period of strains.

At the dialogue, Defence Secretary Sashi Kant Sharma and Chinese Deputy Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo reached an agreement ?upon a plan of bilateral military exchanges for 2013 including their next joint military exercise,? the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The two sides also agreed to expand exchanges covering their Armies, Navies and Air Forces, and reviewed the measures in place to maintain peace along the disputed border.

The dialogue had assumed significance as it marked India?s first military engagement with China following the sweeping changes in the People?s Liberation Army (PLA) last year, as part of the once in a 10 year leadership transition.

The former Deputy Chief of General Staff, Ma Xiaotian, who chaired the earlier rounds of the dialogue, was promoted in October as Air Force Chief. Lieutenant General Qi, who has taken over as the Chinese chair of the dialogue, was appointed as Deputy Chief of General Staff last year.

The dialogue also paves the way for the resumption of joint military exercises, which are set to be held later this year, following a gap of five years. The first round was held in 2007 in Kunming, Yunnan and the second in 2008 in Belgaum, Karnataka.

Defence ties were suspended for close to a year starting in 2009, after the PLA refused to issue a visa to the then head of the Northern Command, saying he was in charge of the ?sensitive? region of Jammu and Kashmir. That same year, China began issuing stapled visas to Indian citizens from the State.

Since last year, both sides have appeared to close the chapter on the issue. While China has begun issuing regular visas to Indian citizens from Jammu and Kashmir, the PLA has also quietly hosted several officers who were posted in the State, during recent exchanges.

Mr. Sharma also called on General Xu Qiliang, a Vice-Chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission, who was, until recently, the Air Force Chief. General Xu was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua news agency that he believed the two countries ?have enough wisdom and ability to handle their relationship and are able to pave a healthy and stable development path for it.?

China, he said, ?attaches great importance in developing military ties with India and hopes to increase mutual strategic trust, enhance friendly communication and deepen pragmatic cooperation in order to promote the strategic partnership for peace and prosperity and make a positive contribution to world and regional peace and stability.?
