Watch: 2 Clips From ?Killer Joe? Showcase Twisted Tone, Better Look At Thomas Haden Church and Juno Temple?s Characters

In a film as filled to the brim with deliciously nasty characters and dialogue as ?Killer Joe,? it?s been frustrating to see it marketed down through snatches of seemingly generic action beats and lines in the trailer. Luckily though, two new clips have appeared to give a better sense of the film?s tone overall, as well as a nice look at the scene-chewing from its excellent cast.

The first clip runs two minutes, and revolves around the Smith family as they let a failed insurance policy payout raise tensions even more, mostly from father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church) toward his son Chris (Emile Hirsch). Gina Gershon and Juno Temple portray the other members of the family, and if everything seems a bit arch and blackly comic, then the second clip with Temple confirms as much. As Temple cheerily explains her matricidal support later to Matthew McConaughey?s Killer Joe, the drolly terrifying assassin asked by Chris to off his mom for her insurance money, the enthusiasm from her and McConaughey over their twisted roles is crystal-clear and great to watch.

That goes for everyone in the film as well, and it?s a testament to director William Friedkin that it never falls too far into grindhouse schlock (although there are moments that toe the line). It?s an immensely dark, hilarious flick, and one that will need all the help it can get when the NC-17 thriller opens July 27 in the US for a limited run. Watch the first clip below, and head over to The Guardian for the non-embeddable second.? [Digital Spy/The Guardian]

PFT: Fitzgerald staying out of Cards' QB battle

7753611adeee4ae3af86172c5cd1b1a9AP

Since it?s supposed to be a slow week, here?s an item that is best suited for consideration during a slow week.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken to Twitter to call me out personally for a joke included at the bottom of a Saturday item regarding Irsay?s position that marketing rights aren?t holding up an eventual contract with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Since most of the latest available pictures of Luck show him wearing a mortar board and a gown tied and draped over his shoulders like an Andy Bernard sweater, and given that the topic of the item was Luck?s marketing rights via the poorly-crafted tweets of Jim Irsay, I closed with this:? ?Luck likely will be free to endorse whatever he wants to endorse, including the use of images of his Stanford graduation to be included in a campaign for online courses aimed at teaching rich, middle-aged white guys how to type legibly on Twitter.?

It was a slap at Irsay?s notorious habit of oft-indecipherable Twitter messages, and using the term ?rich, middle-aged white guys? was aimed at describing Irsay?s overall demographic.

Irsay didn?t see it that way.? On Monday morning, Irsay started the debate with this:

Then, without a response, he said this:

I considered not taking the bait; after all, the guy owns an NFL team.? But like I mentioned above, it?s slow right now.? Also, I wasn?t entirely comfortable with the not-so-subtle effort to suggest that I expect only white people to type legible Twitter message.? (For the record, I expect everyone to type legibly on Twitter.)? Besides, Irsay asked a question.? The least I could do was answer it.

A loyal PFT reader (I knew there was at least one) thereafter responded to the kerfuffle. Irsay then replied to Wes LaFever?s tweet with this:

So, basically, Jim Irsay thinks I?m a racist and I don?t like old people (even though I?m now seven years into the legally-protected class of old people) and I don?t like rich people (even though I?d very much like to be one, someday).

Wow.? He really has cracked the code.

Now if only I could crack the code for interpreting 99.8 percent of his Twitter messages, this job would be a lot easier.

For legion of fans, Apple retail jobs prove a letdown

June 24, 2012 1:06 am

By David Segal?/?The New York Times

Last year, during his best three-month stretch, Jordan Golson sold about $750,000 worth of computers and gadgets at the Apple Store in Salem, N.H. It was a performance that might have called for a bottle of Champagne -- if that were a luxury Mr. Golson could have afforded.

"I was earning $11.25 an hour," he said. "Part of me was thinking, 'This is great. I'm an Apple fan, the store is doing really well.' But when you look at the amount of money the company is making and then you look at your paycheck, it's kind of tough."

America's love affair with the smartphone has helped create tens of thousands of jobs at places like Best Buy and Verizon Wireless and will this year pump billions into the economy.

Within this world, the Apple Store is the undisputed king, a retail phenomenon renowned for impeccable design, deft service and spectacular revenues. Last year, the company's 327 global stores took in more money per square foot than any other U.S. retailer -- wireless or otherwise -- and almost double that of Tiffany, which was No. 2 on the list, according to the research firm RetailSails.

Worldwide, its stores sold $16 billion in merchandise.

But most of Apple's employees enjoyed little of that wealth. While consumers tend to think of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., as the company's heart and soul, a majority of its workers in the United States are not engineers or executives with hefty salaries and bonuses but rather hourly wage earners selling iPhones and MacBooks.

About 30,000 of the 43,000 Apple employees in this country work in Apple Stores, as members of the service economy, and many of them earn about $25,000 a year. They work inside the world's fastest growing industry, for the most valuable company, run by one of the country's most richly compensated chief executives, Tim Cook. Last year, he received stock grants, which vest over a 10-year period, that at today's share price would be worth more than $570 million.

And though Apple is unparalleled as a retailer, when it comes to its lowliest workers, the company is a reflection of the technology industry as a whole.

Much of the debate about U.S. unemployment has focused on why companies have moved factories overseas, but only 8 percent of the U.S. work force is in manufacturing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job growth has for decades been led by service-related work.

Warm Feelings About Patty Duke's Former Home Have Not Resulted ...

Look hard enough and you?ll find a lot of Los Angeles homes for sale come with their own well-chronicled histories, thanks to generations of entertainment-world inhabitants.

On that note ?. kudos to the Hollywood-centric blog??Paradise Leased? for finding the perfect book excerpt to describe a Beverly Hills home once owned by Patty Duke?when she was married to Harry Falk.

It was a colonial mansion off Benedict Canyon in Beverly Hills, jutting out on its own precipice at the top of the mountain with a twelve-car parking lot, a four car garage and a 360-degree view of Los Angeles. Its nine rooms were big, bright and airy, with bay windows and fireplaces everywhere. Everyone who sees this house loves it; Sharon Tate later rented it for a while when she first got pregnant, and she and Roman Polanski wanted to buy it. For Harry and me, two young people supposedly starting out in life, there was great, great excitement about living there.? ? Patty Duke in ?Call Me Anna?

According to LA Curbed, the house Patty Duke was describing was the one she owned from 1966 until 1970 at 1600 Summitridge Dr. in the Beverly Glen neighborhood of the world-famous 90210 ZIP code.

The 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom house with 360-degree views of Los Angeles has been on the market for the better part of 15 months, with a current list price of $5.395 million, down from the original list price of $6.5 million in March 2011.

The home was built in 1942 and has been maintained in pristine, move-in condition. It has found a new selling point as real estate experts in the real estate market have started to connect its history to Duke, as well as Sharon Tate and Polanski, who instead of being able to buy the Duke home instead moved across the street to the infamous house on Cielo Dr. (now torn down and replaced) where Tate was murdered by Charles Manson.

Long before Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez or Hillary Duff or even Marlo Thomas, Duke was the talented young star whose television series helped interpret and reflect modern American life and culture circa 1960.

But when Duke was trying to leave behind ?The Patty Duke Show? and the persona(s) she created ? she played herself and her cousin, a la Haley Mills in ?The Parent Trap? ? she went looking for new roles.?That?s how she would end up fighting for a part in the perfectly dreadful, but box-office success ?Valley of ?the Dolls.?

Nike, Adidas lead suppliers' battle for gold

HERZOGENAURACH, Germany/LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. market leader Nike and German rival Adidas are locked in their own Olympic battle to boost athletes' performance and squeeze maximum value out of next month's Games in London.

The Games provide a showcase for new fashions and advances in technology which sportswear suppliers hope will drive sales at a time of economic turmoil in many of their markets.

Unlike soccer's World Cup, Olympic venues carry no perimeter advertising, making the suppliers of kit and shoes the most visible brands when the eyes of the world are on the Games.

"This puts the likes of Nike, Adidas and Puma firmly in the spotlight in the most emotionally-charged moments," said Danny Townsend, president EMEA and South Asia at brand analysis company Repucom.

"Endorsement deals with athletes who are likely to gain substantial coverage, such as Usain Bolt or Jessica Ennis, pack an immense punch," he added.

"Our projections from the Beijing Games indicate around 3.6 billion people worldwide saw at least some TV coverage which gives a strong indicator to the power of this presence. This level of brand exposure is a potent force in driving sales."

Jamaican triple gold medalist Bolt is the poster boy for Germany's Puma, the third largest sporting goods company behind local rival Adidas.

"The Olympics is probably the biggest platform you can have as a sport brand. With Usain Bolt running the 100 meters, 200 meters and relays, the whole world will focus on that on TV," Puma CEO Franz Koch told Reuters.

Adidas has invested heavily to be the official sportswear partner of the Games, with tens of thousands of volunteers and Olympic officials to wear its familiar three-stripe outfits.

That comes on top of a long-standing deal to provide the kit for a British team which includes heptathlete medal hope Ennis, the photogenic face of the host nation's squad.

"We're kitting out 5,000 athletes and 84,000 volunteers with 3 million pieces of apparel," Adidas Olympics head Simon Cartwright told Reuters at the firm's headquarters in the small German town of Herzogenaurach, which is also home to Puma.

Adidas estimates the interest generated by the Games will bring it an extra 100 million pounds ($157 million) of sales in the UK, helping it on its way to overtake rival Nike as market leader there.

Cartwright says the situation is similar to that in Beijing, when the Games helped it to top the market there in 2008.

"Adidas has got its foot on the accelerator. They've thrown down the gauntlet to Nike because they want to take market leadership in the UK. Nike is more focused on Rio (2016)," said a manager in the sports sponsoring industry.

BIG TWO IN FORM

Based in Portland, Oregon, Nike remains the global market leader, with annual sales of almost $21 billion against $17 billion for Adidas. Puma, formed in 1948 after brothers fell out at Adidas, is a distant third with sales of $3.8 billion.

The top two seem to be pulling away despite the Bolt factor.

Nike's sales jumped 15 percent in the quarter to end-February, while Adidas reported a 14 percent rise in the first three months of the year. Puma managed only a six percent increase, trailing its larger rivals in Europe, China and the United States.

Nike, which sponsors the U.S. Olympic team, says the Games give it the chance to build a buzz around its products.

"It's like a concept car model - we get to debut these innovations on the world's best athletes, then commercialize the opportunity by providing those technologies to athletes everywhere," said Nike UK head of PR and communications Ryan Greenwood.

For its part, Adidas has made 41 different shoes that will be worn by athletes competing in 25 disciplines.

The one thing they all have in common is their weight, they are on average 25 percent lighter than the equivalent shoes worn in Beijing.

"Every 100 grammes saved in weight is equivalent to 1 percent better performance," Cartwright said.

The group has also created what it calls the lightest ever sprint spike, at 99 grammes.

"It's so advanced we can't make that many of them," Cartwright said.

Nike too is promoting ultra-light shoes and a running uniform featuring special patches which reduce the aerodynamic drag on an athlete, an idea taken from the dimples that help golf balls to fly further.

After exhaustive wind tunnel testing, it claims it can cut up to .023 seconds off times in the 100 meters - what it says can be the difference between winning a medal and missing out.

JOSTLING FOR POSITION

Behind Puma, Japan's Asics is the number four in the sector and positions itself as a supplier of premium products for everyone from elite marathon runners down to regular joggers.

The company plans to open a new flagship store on London's Oxford Street just before the Games begin on July 27.

Below those four are a cluster of smaller suppliers, including some from fast growing nations like Russia and China.

Russia's privately owned Bosco is the kit supplier to the Spanish team and has opened a store in the new shopping center on the edge of the Olympic park.

China's Li Ning Co Ltd. came to prominence at Beijing in 2008 when its eponymous founder, a former Olympic gymnast, had the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron.

However, growing competition from Nike and Adidas in China is squeezing it and other local producers.

Li Ning suffered a setback this month when it issued a profit warning and its shares fell to a 6-1/2 year low. China's ANTA Sports Products Ltd has also said it faces a challenging year because of rising costs and intense competition.

"It would take a monumental shift in the global sports apparel environment to impact on the dominance of Nike and Adidas," said Repucom's Townsend.

"I think where we could see the real jostling in the coming years is in the second tier, below the big two," he added.

DESIGNER DAUGHTERS

The Games are not just about the performance, they are also about making sure athletes look good and the top brands have been working with big name designers for this year's Games.

By an odd coincidence, Adidas and Puma have opted for daughters of famous musicians.

Adidas has had a long partnership with Stella McCartney, whose father Paul McCartney is expected to perform at the opening ceremony. Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae icon Bob Marley, has designed the Jamaican kit for Puma.

"Each of our teams have a unique design," Cartwright said, explaining how Adidas has tried to incorporate national symbols into the kits for countries like Germany, France and Australia.

"The young Germans are a bit happier to wave the flag and be more patriotic so we have an eagle design."

While the Team GB kits has divided opinion in the UK, with some seeing them as too blue, Cartwright shrugs off the critics. "It was in the media for two days," indicating how any publicity is good publicity.

Puma meanwhile plundered the history books to draw inspiration for its running vests for the Jamaican team.

The yellow vests will feature the faces of Arthur Wint, who in London in 1948 became the first Jamaican to win a gold medal, and team mate Herb McKenley, who finished second behind him.

"We want to hear people say, 'Ooh, what's that?' We want to be different, unusual," Puma CEO Koch told Reuters.

Robots equipped with tactile sensor able to identify materials through touch, paving the way for more useful prostheses

What does a robot feel when it touches something? Little or nothing until now. But with the right sensors, actuators and software, robots can be given the sense of feel or at least the ability to identify different materials by touch.

Researchers at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering published a study today in Frontiers in Neurorobotics showing that a specially designed robot can outperform humans in identifying a wide range of natural materials according to their textures, paving the way for advancements in prostheses, personal assistive robots and consumer product testing.

The robot was equipped with a new type of tactile sensor built to mimic the human fingertip. It also used a newly designed algorithm to make decisions about how to explore the outside world by imitating human strategies. Capable of other human sensations, the sensor can also tell where and in which direction forces are applied to the fingertip and even the thermal properties of an object being touched.

Like the human finger, the group's BioTac sensor has a soft, flexible skin over a liquid filling. The skin even has fingerprints on its surface, greatly enhancing its sensitivity to vibration. As the finger slides over a textured surface, the skin vibrates in characteristic ways. These vibrations are detected by a hydrophone inside the bone-like core of the finger. The human finger uses similar vibrations to identify textures, but the robot finger is even more sensitive.

When humans try to identify an object by touch, they use a wide range of exploratory movements based on their prior experience with similar objects. A famous theorem by 18th century mathematician Thomas Bayes describes how decisions might be made from the information obtained during these movements. Until now, however, there was no way to decide which exploratory movement to make next. The article, authored by Professor of Biomedical Engineering Gerald Loeb and recently graduated doctoral student Jeremy Fishel, describes their new theorem for solving this general problem as "Bayesian Exploration."

Built by Fishel, the specialized robot was trained on 117 common materials gathered from fabric, stationery and hardware stores. When confronted with one material at random, the robot could correctly identify the material 95% of the time, after intelligently selecting and making an average of five exploratory movements. It was only rarely confused by pairs of similar textures that human subjects making their own exploratory movements could not distinguish at all.

So, is touch another task that humans will outsource to robots? Fishel and Loeb point out that while their robot is very good at identifying which textures are similar to each other, it has no way to tell what textures people will prefer. Instead, they say this robot touch technology could be used in human prostheses or to assist companies who employ experts to assess the feel of consumer products and even human skin.

Loeb and Fishel are partners in SynTouch LLC, which develops and manufactures tactile sensors for mechatronic systems that mimic the human hand. Founded in 2008 by researchers from USC's Medical Device Development Facility, the start-up is now selling their BioTac sensors to other researchers and manufacturers of industrial robots and prosthetic hands.

###

Another paper from this research group in the same issue of Frontiers in Neurorobotics describes the use of their BioTac sensor to identify the hardness of materials like rubber.

Original funding for development of the sensor was provided by the Keck Futures Initiative of the National Academy of Sciences to develop a better prosthetic hand for amputees. SynTouch also received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to integrate BioTac sensors with such prostheses. The texture discrimination project was funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the material hardness study by the National Science Foundation.

Fishel just completed his doctoral dissertation in biomedical engineering based on the texture research. Loeb, also Director of the USC Medical Device Development Facility, holds 54 U.S. Patents and has published over 200 journal articles on topics ranging from cochlear implants for the deaf to fundamental studies of muscles and nerves.

Mitt Romney sits for an interview, and not just on Fox News

Mitt Romney sat down for an interview on 'Face the Nation,' fielding hard balls not typically thrown at him on Fox News. Meanwhile, Obama strategist David Plouffe darted among four other Sunday talk shows, zinging Romney and defending Obama's controversial moves.

Mitt Romney threw off his media security blanket Sunday. That is, he sat down for a substantial TV interview that was not hosted by the friendly folks at Fox News.

Appearing on CBS?s ?Face the Nation,? he faced veteran newsman Bob Schieffer, who peppered him with questions about the economy, immigration, Europe?s financial crisis, and other issues.

It wasn?t exactly the Spanish Inquisition (no verbal water-boarding), nor was it anything like a proper press conference where reporters could tag-team him.

Know your US presidents? See if D.C. Decoder can stump you!

But there were follow-up questions. Three times, for example, Romney ducked answering whether he?d repeal President Obama?s order regarding the children of illegal immigrants brought to this country.

That?s a tough one for Romney, who?s feeling pressure from some prominent Republicans (Jeb Bush,?Marco Rubio, and?Haley Barbour among them) to back away from the very tough line he took on immigration during the GOP primary debates.

Now, he told Schieffer, ?I would work with Congress to put in place a long-term solution for the children of those that have come here illegally.? (On immigration, it seems, he?s sounding more and more like that old softy Newt Gingrich.)

Romney was questioned on another ticklish subject ? Obamacare, the model for which was Romney?s own health insurance program when he was governor of Massachusetts.

With the Supreme Court's ruling on the constitutionality of Obama's health care law expected as soon as Monday, Romney described what he would do if the justices threw it out.

He wants to make sure people "don't have to worry about losing their insurance" if they already have a medical condition and change jobs; that individuals can buy coverage on their own, if they choose to do so, "on the same tax-advantage basis" as companies do; and that states, aided by federal dollars, take responsibility for the poor and uninsured.

Again, that sounds at least somewhat more nuanced than his ?I?d repeal Obamacare on day one? line.

Here?s Romney?s exchange regarding Europe?s financial crisis:

Schieffer: "If the European economy falls apart, the American economy is going to be in big trouble. What should we be doing right now?"

Romney Bus Changes Route Through Pennsylvania To Avoid Challenge From Democrats

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. -- Mitt Romney has changed the route of his campaign bus tour through Pennsylvania after Democrats planned to show up and challenge him at one stop.

Romney intended to visit a gas station and convenience store in Quakertown, which is about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Romney's team had set up a microphone for him to speak at the Wawa story. But they caught wind that former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell would be at the site to hold a competing event.

Romney's motorcade, including his bus, decided to stop at a different Wawa in Quakertown. Inside the second store, Romney told reporters that Rendell's planned appearance sparked the schedule change.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Mitt Romney on Saturday tried to refocus his bus tour on middle-class economic issues as he visited a Pennsylvania foundry a day after President Barack Obama's new immigration policy consumed the campaign debate.

"I think we have to have a very careful review of who's giving a fair shot to the American people," Romney told a crowd of several hundred packed into a warehouse at Weatherly Casting and Machine Co., next to the train tracks that run through this town about 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Criticizing the president, Romney slipped and referred to Obama as a "governor."

"Governor might have been a better job for him to have started with," Romney joked.

The stop was the first of three planned appearances in small towns in this state with 20 electoral votes that Obama won in 2008 with 54 percent. No Republican presidential nominee has carried the state since 1988.

Romney appeared with former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a possible running mate, who told the crowd, "Mitt Romney's message is: It will be better."

The tour is intended to challenge Obama in states where he's strong. Romney is targeting smaller cities and towns through the state's more conservative midsection. Weatherly is in Carbon County, which Obama narrowly carried in 2008.

Romney also was scheduled to stop in Quakertown, in Bucks County, as well as at Cornwall Iron Furnace, a national historic landmark. That's in Lebanon County, which GOP nominee John McCain won in 2008.

Romney's is on a bus tour, but he planned to fly each night to the next state and ride from town to town during the day. It's his first traditional campaign swing since the primary and is aimed at undecided voters in six pivotal states won by Obama four years ago: New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa.

The tour represents a new mode for Romney in the general election. During the primary, Romney sometimes ran into trouble in less-scripted environments and the bus tour probably will test him again. He also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with average people.

The last time Romney was in Pennsylvania, he campaigned with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and said he was "studying" the Cuban-American's ideas for legislation that would allow some illegal immigrants to stay in the country to work.

The opening of Romney's six-state, five-day tour was overshadowed by Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. no longer would deport some young illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. In response, Romney softened the harsh rhetoric he used in addressing illegal immigration during the contentious GOP primary campaign.

"It's an important matter to be considered and should be solved on a long-term basis so they know what their future would be in this country," Romney told reporters after stepping off his bus in New Hampshire. Obama's executive order was problematic, he said, because "an executive order, of course, is a short-term matter. It can be reversed by subsequent presidents."

That measured response echoed Rubio's own reaction to Obama's announcement. Although pressed by reporters, Romney refused to take a firm position or say whether he would, if elected president, reverse the executive order.

The focus on immigration also threatened to raise questions about whether Romney would shift his positions based on changing political circumstances.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, adopted a tough line on immigration during the primary, calling the main immigration bill in Congress a "handout" and saying he would veto it as president. The legislation would provide a pathway to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who attended college or served in the military.

Romney faces pressure to appeal to the Hispanic voters who will be critical in Nevada, Colorado and elsewhere, but he also risks alienating his conservative base if he abandons his previously tough stances.
